THE CAREER
The police officer's role is complex and demanding and officer is expected to be highly trained knowledgeable about the law, skilled in human relations, possessing excellent communication common sense, as well as possessing initiative must be committed to serving and preserving the community, be self-motivated and have the ability to work with a tremendous variety of routine and crisis situations crisis a complete understanding of the law enforcement process.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Age - Minimum 18 years of age to apply.
Education - Grade 12 or equivalent.
Citizenship - Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
Health - Excellent health and sound physical condition.
Character - Exemplary.
Vision - Must not exceed 20/40 correctable to 20/20.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possess a valid drivers licence.
- Possess a current first aid certificate.
- Possess a basic rescuer of basic cardiac life support certificate.
- Pass a series of qualifying tests, including philological tests a physical fitness test, an indepth recruitment interview and finally an interview by a selection committee of senior ranking officers.
- Pass a complete medical examination performed by a qualified medical practitioner designated.
RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS:
Community college courses that are particularly relevant to police work include law and security, social services, and sociology. University courses that would must benefit police officer include criminology, psychology, humanities, law and social science. Also any experience in police work that individuals could gain through volunteer service or work as an auxiliary police officer would both better their understanding of what police officers do and improve their chances of securing an entry level position as a police officer.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Successful canadians will be hired as a recruit cadet. Subject to the successful completion of the peel regional police and Ontario Police College recruit class Constables From that appointment will commence, during which time his/her suitability as an officer will be regularly assessed.
The total of 20 weeks training at the Peel Regional Police training facility and the Ontario Police College in Aylmer includes instructions in various areas of federal, provincial and municipal laws, as well as behavioural sciences, police operational procedures and skill training is also an important aspect of the curriculum. (A fee will be charged by the college for the training.)
OPPORTUNITIES:
Opportunities may exist for experienced officer include: criminal and youth crime investigation, tactical and rescue unit, canine services, intelligence services, marine unit, crime prevention, services and special investigative. bureaux including, homicide, frauds, morality and auto theft.
HOURS/VACATION TIME:
Most police officers work 40 hours per week. However, an officer's specific work schedule will depend on the scheduling procedures of his or her particular police force. For example, some police forces schedule their officers to work 8 hours a day for 5 days each week, while other officer to work 8 hours a day for 5 days each week.
Police work must be done 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Consequently, all officers are required to work weekend and night shifts part of the time. Officers are also required to work overtime when there is a lot of police work to be done (for example, when a large public event or demonstration is being held and large numbers of police officers are required to ensure safety and order).
Police officers may receive anywhere from 10-30 day of vacation time per year. The number of vacation day that officers receive increases as they accumulate seniority.
FUTURE OF POLICE CAREER:
The jobs of police officers will always will be increasing because as population is growing in Canada there will be more criminals and more crimes. The population is growing very fast because lots of people are coming to Canada from different countries and places. This will be a good career to apply for now.
